Tips and Tricks from the Expert
A fine cigar is more than just the sum of its tobacco leaves. It’s not something you simply smoke on the side; it’s something to savor. That’s why the key to enjoying a cigar to its fullest is one essential ingredient – time!
Step 1:
The Cut
Once you’ve chosen a cigar, the preparation for your smoking pleasure begins with a common dilemma: which cut is the best? The classic straight cut? The V-cut (also known as a notch cut)? Or do you favor a punch cutter? Each style has its enthusiasts, so there’s no definitive "best."
Many aficionados enjoy experimenting with the "Gentleman’s Crosscut"—two V-cuts forming a cross. For cigars with larger ring gauges, the "Lucky Clover" technique is also popular, where multiple holes are punched in the shape of a four-leaf clover.
Since it ultimately comes down to personal preference, the best approach is to try out different cuts and discover what suits your taste.
Allow us to pose a question in return: Which cut do you prefer?
Step 2:
Lighting Up
Next comes the choice of how to light your cigar. Should you use cedar spills? Cigar matches? Or perhaps a (jet) lighter? The decision is entirely up to you, depending on what works best for you. However, one golden rule must never, EVER be broken: do not use a petrol lighter! No matter how stylish your Zippo may be or how sentimental it is, using one will ruin your cigar experience! If you can’t part with your Zippo, consider fitting it with a gas insert. If you have questions, we’d be happy to help.
Our Recommendation: Never hold the cigar directly in the flame. Instead, position it slightly above the flame. This avoids burning the tobacco and instead "toasts" it. Hold the flame in one hand while rotating the cigar above it with the other. This creates a nice glowing ring (or corona) and reduces the risk of uneven burning. Uneven burns often happen when heat is concentrated in the cigar’s center. Be careful not to scorch the outer wrapper, as this can produce bitter flavors that will affect the entire cigar.
For a unique smoking experience, you might try a method developed by a French cigar sommelier: light the cigar before cutting it. This prevents smoke from entering the draw channels before the cut, resulting in a purer smoking experience.
Step 3:
The Enjoyment
Now that your cigar is properly toasted, let’s return to the most important part—take your time! Don’t draw too often or too forcefully, as this can cause the cigar to overheat and develop a sharp, peppery taste. Allow the flavors to unfold at their own pace. Take a gentle draw, hold the smoke in your mouth for a moment, and let the subtle aromas work their magic. Then, exhale the smoke—but never inhale!
A Note on Ash: Avoid tapping the ash off; let it fall naturally—ideally into a prepared cigar ashtray. If you prefer to remove it yourself, gently roll the ash off into the tray rather than flicking it.
For many aficionados, the experience isn’t complete without a complementary beverage to pair with their cigar. The choice of drink is entirely yours, but we recommend something slightly sweet, as the sweetness beautifully balances and enhances the cigar’s smoky character.
Take your time, savor the moment, and enjoy the harmony of flavors!
Step 4:
The Smoking Duration
One of the most frequently asked questions is: how far or how long should you smoke a cigar? The answer is simple: smoke your cigar for as long as you enjoy it! Sometimes that means down to the last few millimeters, and other times only halfway through.
If you’re interrupted during your smoke, you can relight the cigar. However, we recommend doing so within about an hour, as the cooled smoke inside the cigar can produce bitter compounds that may affect its delicate flavor. Before relighting, consider "degassing" the cigar by gently blowing into it to clear the draw channels.
When You’re Done: When you’re finished with your cigar, avoid stubbing it out. Instead, place it in the ashtray and let it extinguish naturally. Stubbing out a cigar not only creates a strong, unpleasant odor but can also detract from the overall ambiance of the smoking experience.
Enjoy your cigar to the fullest, at your own pace, and savor the moment!
